A lot of wine makers employ oak aging in their products, both to add complexity, and to help balance out harsh flavors. Therefore, guess what some brewers are now doing? More and more breweries are starting to age their beers in either used or fresh oak. The amount of barrel aged beers is climbing every day, and is producing some astonishing results.

I believe the definition of the term, “acquired taste” should somehow include the Belgian rarity that is Lambic beer. They smell of old, dirty hops, are infected with bacteria, taste sour to the point of being excruciating, and I love them.

I recently tried August A. Busch’s newest product, Bud Ale. My Bud rep was kind enough to sling me a couple of bottles. I chilled it down, cracked it open, and split it between my colleagues. I am reviewing it now, as I would any ale, not giving it any special treatment even though it is made by what was formerly the largest American Brewer.

You may have noticed more and more Craft Beers being packaged in cans. The designated Craft 6-pack slots on our shelves are giving way to can placements. This seems odd, considering can beer is often associated with crap.

While recently visiting my hometown of Ft. Collins, CO (and surrounding area), I attended a few different beer bars. Two were outstanding, and one was mediocre. None could hold a candle to the sheer vastness of selection found in several Boston area beer bars but, the quality was evident.
