2015 Isole e Olena Cepparello

The 2015 Cepparello is one of the darkest and sexiest in recent memory, and, as he always does, Paolo Demarchi has masterfully captured the heart and soul of Sangiovese. Sweet herbs, black tea, rose, flowers, licorice with crushed raspberries, juicy cherries build to a richly textured, dramatic finish. Like all the greats, the 2015 succeeds in being gracious and familiar while also feeling excitingly new at the same time.
As a vintage there has been a tremendous amount of justified hype surrounding 2015 in Tuscany. Look at how Antonio Galloni characterized (or gushed) about the wines: “radiant”, “gorgeous”, “rich” and “sumptuous”. Those words easily apply to the 2015 Cepparello. It is a vintage of the sun, a warm growing season that resulted in the fruit feeling driven, dramatic and powerful. What separates Cepparello from the rest of the Tuscan pack is Mr. Demarchi. A traditionalist to the core, he has held fast to his convictions and been a grand defender of Sangiovese and traditional methods in Chianti. His winemaking is considered some of the best in Italy. His wines are considered monuments to not only the varietal, but the entire country. “Make no mistake about it, these are some of the greatest wines being made anywhere in the world,” wrote Galloni. It doesn’t hurt that Mr. Demarchi lays claim to some of the most prized vineyards in the region, either. Critics have yet to release the scores on the 2015, but you don’t really need them, do you?
