2014 Neil Ellis Left Bank

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, “Left Bank” carries itself on finely tuned full-bodied structure of rich, dense red berry fruits and well-integrated oak. Make no mistake: this will be the best bottle of red you can possibly buy for under $11.

More About the Wine

Established in 1993, Neil Ellis winery is the partnership of winemaker and wine-entrepreneur, Neil Ellis and Stellenbosch-based businessman, Hans Peter Schröder. Together the two became early pioneers for bringing South African wine to world class standards.

Mr. Ellis is very particular to where he sources his grapes (he has been a pioneering négociant since the early 1980’s) and over the decades has refined his collection of growers from all over the Western Cape. The grapes from Left Bank are sourced from three separate appellations: Stellenbosch, Darling and Elgin. While each have their own unique (clay/loam) terroir the thread that connects them is the sustainable and environmentally friendly viticulture practices: Grapes are handpicked to reduce soil compaction. Indigenous vegetation such as the native Fynbos is used as cover crops to eliminate erosion and promote healthy soils. These are details and attention that you don’t find for a 50,000 case production, at least not in most places. But clearly Mr. Ellis cares and the quality and love shows in his wines. Today, winemaking responsibilities have been handed over to his son, Warren. We look forward to the continued story that this special family will tell. For newcomers, this crazy discount on the 2014 Left Bank is a great place to start.
