Can’t Be Missed: Another Insane German Riesling Blowout

Schloss

Schloss Lieser ranks among Germany’s truly elite, both historically and in the modern hierarchies. However, there was a long stretch of serious underperformance. Then Thomas Haag took up the reins in 1992 and spent the better part of a decade reforming old vineyards and restoring the dilapidated castle. Today, the wines rank among Germany’s best every vintage.

There’s a reason – terroir. Sure, he’s got choice parcels of Graacher Himmelreich and Wehlener Sonnenuhr, but the Domaine also has a serious swathe of Brauneberger Juffer. But beyond vineyards, Haag is recognized as one of the leading lights of Germany’s modern wine scene. Crafting utterly brilliant and classical wines of poise, intensity and balance, these are among the finest in all of Germany.

And we have scored another large parcel of great 2015s and 2016s are, frankly, INSANE pricing. Even sharper and steeper discounts on display here than the Zilliken offer.

Buy these. As much as you can. Buy them. These opportunities are exceedingly rare. Take advantage.

2016 Schloss Lieser Riesling Estate Feinherb

2016 Schloss Lieser Riesling Kabinett Graacher Himmelreich

“Harvested at approx. 90° Oechsle, this offers juicy scents of pear, grapefruit, fresh pineapple and fine spices on the nose. The wine proves intense and delicately playful on the palate and leaves a smooth yet subtly racy feel in the long finish. This is still very primary and will need a little bit of time to develop its full potential. It could then exceed our high expectations, especially if it gains in aromatic precision. 2026-2036” 91+ Points, Rated: Outstanding, Mosel Fine Wines

2016 Schloss Lieser Riesling Kabinett Brauneberger Juffer

“Harvested at approx. 90° Oechsle, this develops a beautiful nose of ripe pear, white peach, some earthy spices and candied grapefruit. The wine proves nicely playful and remarkably pure on the palate and leaves a great feel of herbs and spices in the long and refined finish. This is a plain gorgeous and quite complex expression of a light and playful Spätlese-styled Riesling! 2026-2041” 92 Points, Rated: Outstanding, Mosel Fine Wines

2016 Schloss Lieser Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr

“Harvested at approx. 90° Oechsle, this develops a delicately ripe yet elegant expression of pear, melon, herbs and spices. The wine delivers fine spices and tactile refinement on the Spätlese-styled palate. The finish is pure silk and finesse. This is still rather closed but shows already great pear and earthy herbs infused complexity. The presence is that of a Spätlese, the playfulness that of a Kabinett. What a beautiful effort with great upside potential if it gains in aromatic precision! 2026-2041” 91+ Points, Rated: Outstanding, Mosel Fine Wines
