Morey

Some wines hide in plain site. Marc Morey’s Chassagne 1er Cru En Virondots is one of them.

The area I’ve circled is known generally as “La Grande Montagne.” It includes what many people consider the finest vineyards of Chassagne – 1ers La Romanée, Grandes Ruchottes and En Caillerets. There are also two other plots that are much less well know – a 1er called La Grande Montagne itself and 1er En Virondots.

I can guarantee you’ve never seen En Virondots before, except from Domaine Marc Morey. Why? Morey owns 2.02 hA of this 2.27 hA vineyard and the other owner chooses to bottle under the name “La Grande Montagne,” as all these 1ers Crus are permitted to do. As such, Sabine Mollard is fond of joking that En Virondots is a “commerical monopole.”

But all of this history and arcana aside, this is a monumental wine of great power, length, complexity and minerality. Much like Ramonet’s legendary Ruchottes, en Virondots combines the best elements of Chassagne into something that is much more than the sum of its parts – full, yet fresh; powerful, yet elegant; deep, rich fruit, and yet saline, long, and fine. It bears remembering that this is about half the cost of Ramonet’s.
