2018 Sette Cieli Yantra Toscana IGT
With its modest price tag and ample charm, no one will have any problem with “Yantra”, a value Super-Tuscan by Tenuta Sette Cieli. Torn herbs, dried flowers and mint are found on a beautifully persistent medium body making for a compelling and impressively polished Super Tuscan that we will never say no to.
Tenuta Sette Cieli is located between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The unique climate, four hundred meters above sea level, proved to be irresistible to the Ratti family who purchased 140 acres of wild, untouched land in 1994. The family chose the name “Tenuta Sette Cieli, (“the Estate of Seven Skies”) because the property sits atop a hill at over 1,300 feet. This mild and cooler Mediterranean influenced terroir slows the grapes’ ripening and lengthens hang times—allowing for intensifying flavor development in the grapes. Today Cieli has approximately 25 acres planted, all of which are organically farmed Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec.
“Yantra” represents the entry level bottling, introducing the old school / lightly modern style the estate is becoming celebrated for. It is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, all of which is fermented with native yeasts in stainless-steel tanks at controlled low temperatures. After primary and malolactic fermentations are completed, the wine is aged for six months in neutral used French oak barrels for six months beforing being filtered and bottled.
We’re offered Yantra before, and suspect this won’t be the last. If you enjoy classy, polished, well-made Super Tuscans, but don’t want to shell out the money, you need to go long on Yantra.
