El Nido

Even its most ardent followers won’t argue the wines born from Bodegas El Nido are in flavor, size, and for that matter, points, Extra Large. Since 2002, El Nido has perfected the art of hedonistic opulence to impressive heights. For the 2015–a record hot year for Spain– those skyscraper proportions are stretched even further. Clocking in at 16% alcohol, you can’t really can’t get any bigger or sumptuous than this. The 2015 release from El Nido has been circled on the calendar for a long, long time. The wait was worth it. The hulk has entered the building here folks. “Clio” could be the finest rendition every produced. El Nido was awarded the highest score in sixteen years.

Exploding with sweet fruit, lavishly coated with an ultra soft creamy texture, you may scoff at the IMAX sized theatrics, but you will still be swept away. It’s impossible to resist the gusto here, and for all the late night dinner parties that this bottle will undoubtedly witness, I am positive it will keep everyone awake and entertained until the wee hours of the morning.

“Tasting two completely different vintages of the same wine is very revealing, and having the 2015 Clio next to the 2014 showed how each of them revealed the character of the vintage. 2015 is a very complete and balanced year, resulting in classic, powerful wines with concentration and balance, and all that is needed to age in bottle. This is a similar blend as the 2014, mostly Monastrell with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for almost two years in French and American oak barrels. The oak is there, but it feels like the fruit is able to integrate it with some more time in bottle. In general, there is a lot more balance and freshness than in the 2014, and the character of the Monastrell is a lot more noticeable than the Cabernet. This should develop nicely in bottle. 50,000 bottles were filled in September 2017.” 92 Points, Wine Advocate

“Following the style of the Clio from the same vintage, the 2015 El Nido is a powerful, ripe and concentrated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Monastrell aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 23 months. It’s bottled with 16% alcohol, not a shy wine but not one that shows heat, as it keeps the balance in an XL way. It feels concentrated, powerful and young, but the oak is surprisingly more integrated than in the 2014. As it happens with many wines, this is not for everybody, as it has a marked style, but for those who like this profile, this could very well be the finest vintage of El Nido to date. It can be had with powerful food, but it should be better with a few years in bottle. 5,500 bottles were filled in September 2017.” 95 Points, Wine Advocate
