Introducing Francois Buffet

“Another Volnay producer to add to the list of those delivering higher-quality wines than ever.”
I was more than impressed with Domaine Francois Buffet’s 2016 Volnay 1er Taillepieds, a wine which I had in France a few years ago. I filed the name away, and vowed to follow up. Then COVID happened. However, after tasting tout le gamme at Grands Jours, I reached out to Marc-Olivier and demanded we work together. Thankfully, he agreed. But it’s not just me who’s been impressed by these wines. Check out Neal Martin on the 2020s:
Having been impressed by the showing of Domaine François Buffet’s wines in the Burgfest tasting, it was time to pay winemaker Marc-Olivier Buffet a visit at his Volnay winery, which lies opposite the church. … These superb 2020s from Buffet were picked from August 22. I find great purity, poise and terroir expression here, with silky tannins and vivacious red fruit. Whole bunch was used prudently, only added where necessary. This is another Volnay producer to add to the list of those delivering higher-quality wines than ever.
I couldn’t agree more. This is another Domaine where purity is at the forefront, and the house style is one of delicacy, with terroir taking center stage. Domaines such as these never seemed to gain traction with the critical class a decade ago and before. Power, oak, and, for lack of a better term, “obviousness” was catnip to the critics, and therefore the public.
However, there has been a sea-change in Burgundy these days. Finesse and purity are at a premium, and for those willing to dig, there are still a few bones to be found, especially in villages like Volnay, where the baseline for quality is already so high. I am elated to have added Marc-Olivier to the growing list of producers we work directly with. These are stunning wines and offered at exceptionally sharp pricing. My advice? Go long!
2020 Domaine F. Buffet Volnay 1er Clos des Chenes
Neal Martin: “The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which contains one-third whole bunch, offers dark cherry, bergamot, cranberry and light earthy notes on the nose. The palate is very well balanced with fine substance, quite crystalline red fruit with excellent tension and energy on the finish. Superb!” 93-95 pts.
2020 Domaine F. Buffet Volnay 1er Champans
Neal Martin: “The 2020 Volnay Champans 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet with lifted red cherries, crushed strawberry and light undergrowth notes, the one-third whole bunch nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine backbone, very fresh and quite saline with a brisk, quite spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.” 92-94 pts.
