2014 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes
“This is great Cornas with deep-plum and liquorice fruit, and it’s both concentrated and youthful. The purity is staggering, defined by hints of chocolate and pepper that run through pristine dark-plum-fruit flavors. There’s also a graphite-like mineral thread and a long core of reliable tannin that builds into a finish oozing potential. Great wine: best from 2022.” 94 Points, James Suckling
“…The 2014 Cornas les Vieilles Vignes (18 months in 15% new French oak) offers impressive amounts of graphite, black and blue fruits, licorice and scorched earth in its medium to full-bodied, concentrated, focused style. It needs 2-3 years of cellaring and will drink well for a decade.” 93 Points, Wine Advocate
More About the Wine
Mr. Voge began making wine in 1958 on his father’s farm located in the heart of Cornas. This was not an easy decision–though Cornas had a rich and prestigious history, the appellation itself was in danger of being slowly forgotten. Mr. Voge quickly began to understand his life’s mission: to bring his Cornas to the best restaurants in France and show the true magic of his terroir.
With over seventy parcels covering seven hectares, it is no wonder that Mr. Voge sometimes seems preoccupied. Half in jest, Voge says he harvests so late to figure out which vines are his. Today the Voge wines are vinified by ex-Chapoutier winemaker Albert Mazoyers, and we’re thrilled to see that the wines are still brilliant. Mazoyers has kept the staunchly traditional recipe (only decreasing the use of SO2 at bottling). The vineyards have also been fully converted to Biodynamic, something we are thrilled to see.
2014 has been hiding in the shadows of the 2015’s, but keep in mind they are no pushovers. In the hands of the masters–such as Voge–2014’s fruit is still remarkably fresh highlight with a classic, powerful structure. We’re thrilled where the 2014 Vielles Vignes is and it will only continue to evolve to greater heights. For $45? You can’t beat it.
