“Nothing Short of Remarkable:” 2015 Sottimano

Sottimano, easily one of Barbaresco’s top growers, has released their highly anticipated 2015 collection. “My visit to Sottimano was a real highlight of the time I spent in Barbaresco this past summer” reports Antonio Galloni. “I have been buying these wines for my own cellar since the mid 1990s. The transformation here since then has been nothing short of remarkable.”
Galloni isn’t the only critic in love with this special estate: “From top to bottom, this is an impressive set of wines from Sottimano, a property that continues its rapid ascent into the top echelon of the region’s finest estates,” proclaims Wine Advocate.
We’re not at all surprised by the hype or the glowing scores here – especially with the 2015 vintage– and Sottimano deserves it. For years Andrea and his father Rino have produced wines of outstanding quality, and they’re only getting better. Much of this can be tied to the incredible terroir they hold, along with the straight forward traditional winemaking. In terms of technique, the Sottimanos prefer the old-fashioned way: minimal intervention, including indigenous yeasts and no fining or filtering. There are no insecticides used and only organically sourced fertilizers. Elegant, evocative, subtle and yet hearty, this is true Barbaresco at its finest.
2015 Sottimano Barbaresco Fausoni
“The 2015 Barbaresco Fausoni offers terrific freshness and lift, especially within the context of the year. Bright red berry fruit and floral notes give this mid-weight, nervy Barbaresco much of its vibrancy. The tannins could use a bit more bottle age to soften, but otherwise, the 2015 is just as impressive today as it was last year, when I tasted it just after bottling.” 94 Points, Vinous
2015 Sottimano Barbaresco Cottà
“From a celebrated cru in Neive, the 2015 Barbaresco Cottà is a shapely, soft and accessible interpretation of Nebbiolo from a warm vintage. This mid-weight wine boasts a bright bouquet with ruby highlights. Those aromas are alert, tonic and straightforward in delivery. In terms of mouthfeel, this wine is firm and structured. However, the astringency is safely within bounds (for a young Nebbiolo). Some 10,000 bottles were made. Only 10% of the wine goes into new oak and the rest goes into neutral barrique.” 93 Points, Wine Advocate
2015 Sottimano Barbaresco Basarin
“Violet, pipe tobacco, woodland berry and sandalwood aromas form an enticing bouquet. It’s linear and radiant, delivering cranberry, red cherry, cake spice, star anise and chopped herb. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide the framework. Drink 2023–2030. 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
