Today’s offer has a special place in my heart, because the family behind the wine is a long-time friend of the store, stretching back well over 20 years. Moreover, I can say - unreservedly - that of all the families I have had the good fortune to work with, get to know and experience up close and personally, the Vajras may be the most generous, gracious and lovely people I have met in the world of wine.
The young, energetic and affable Giuseppe Vajra carries himself much the way his wines present to the world - open, polished and charming. There are few producers in any region who display the kind of class, decency, diligence and simple excellence that the Vajra family seems to exude effortlessly. A mainstay of our Piemontese selections for years, I am often humbled tasting through their range of exceptional offerings. Profound vintage or poor, noble terroir or humble entry level, the Vajras seem to make wines that are thoroughly satisfying on every level – sensually, intellectually, soulfully.
While the Vajras produce a wide range of exceptional wines from Freisa to Dolcetto to Barbera and even Riesling, the most exciting is always Nebbiolo, Piemonte’s most noble grape, responsible for the region’s famous Barolos and Barbarescos. While the range of Barolos from the Vajras are remarkable, this quality-conscious family produces exceptional wines up and down the hierarchy.
The Langhe Nebbiolo is no exception.
Hailing from vineyards in Sinio and farmed entirely organically, this is no “simple” Nebbiolo. Produced with as much care and attention as the more serious expressions, the Langhe Nebbiolo receives a similarly long and gentle fermentation and, as such, is equally expressive. Floral and fragrant, with spice and earth to boot, this wine really overdelivers.
You can’t go wrong with this. A case may not be enough!
2018 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo $20.50 NET
90 pts.: “The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from a parcel in Sinio. Dark fruit, spice, earthy notes and a good bit of tannin give the Vajra's Langhe Nebbiolo a decidedly brooding, powerful feel and quite a bit more seriousness than is typical at this level. Sweet red berry fruit, mint and spice add freshness alongside bright acidity as the 2018 opens up in the glass. This is such a pretty and expressive wine.” Antonio Galloni
