It’s a challenge to get across in a few paragraphs just how stunningly special Château Trotanoy is. Pomerol is perhaps the most sacred wine turf in the world to me, and this is about as good as it gets. That’s quite a claim when their neighbours on Pomerol’s legendary clay ‘button’ include Petrus, Le Pin, and Vieux Château Certan, but it’s one that I’m happy to make. In 19th century editions of the legendary wine guide Feret, Trotanoy was ranked as number two in Pomerol- above their sibling property Pétrus (a stone’s throw away and under the ownership of the Moueix family) and behind only ‘VCC’.

Today, Neal Martin, the world’s current leading authority on Pomerol, puts it like this:

“I would get on a plane and travel the world for just a sip of an ancient Trotanoy … a laconic cru compared to its more gregarious cousin Pétrus. It’s telling that when I ask local winemakers to name the wine they aspire to, the wine that typifies Pomerol, there was only one answer, Trotanoy. … Without question, the greatest wines of Trotanoy are exemplary, a lesson in profound wine”

A lesson in profound wine - I can’t put it better than that. The château has entered a new era of brilliance with the maturity of vines that were replanted in numbers in the early 90s following a (relatively speaking) underwhelming few years, and Trotanoy’s reviews and scores now compete with and often beat any other wine in Bordeaux, left bank or right. This is not just a prince among wines, but a king. Described below as ‘Clearly one of the wines of the vintage’- quite an accolade in 2015.

The ridiculously exciting opportunity that I offer today is a wine that I believe will go down as one of the all time great Trotanoys, which lets face it, makes it one of the all time great wines. Not only is the wine itself almost obscenely brilliant, this is the lowest price not only in the States, but also in France or the UK.

2015 Château Trotanoy, Pomerol

Breathtaking aromas of perfectly ripe fruit with blackberries, black olives, licorice, cedar and sweet tobacco. Full body, incredible depth and power, yet this is always in reserve and check. Everything is in the right place for this new legend from Trotanoy. Try it in 2026. Will age for decades in the future. 100 pts., James Suckling

The 2015 Trotanoy is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. In 2015, Trotanoy captures all the intensity of the year in its ample, full-bodied frame, and yet there is more than enough structure, energy and minerality to play off the wine's more overt leanings. A rush of black cherry, plum, graphite, leather, smoke and game punctuate the huge, tannic finish. What a wine! 98 pts., Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2015 Trotanoy has an intense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, still with a little new oak to be subsumed but there is wonderful delineation here with hints of bay leaf and smoke emerging with time. The palate is grippy on the entry. This is a Pomerol with great backbone and structure and yet there is also wondrous delineation and complexity, a crescendo of flavor with black truffle and allspice emerging toward the persistent finish. Outstanding. 96 pts., Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

Composed of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Trotanoy reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and comes prancing out of the glass with the most striking black fruit preserves, plum pudding, red currant jelly and blueberry compote notions, followed up by nuances of rose petals, chocolate box, licorice and menthol plus a waft of wild mushrooms. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, it fills the palate with generous perfumed black and blue fruit layers with a seductive frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and very minerally. 97 pts., Lisa Perotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
