Allen Meadows is the man behind the quote in today’s subject line. The full quote runs as follows:

“As I have noted before, Chevillon rarely misses; indeed I would describe the domaine as one of the most consistent in all of Burgundy. … Moreover, because Nuits in the Côte de Nuits is like Pommard in the Côte de Beaune, meaning it gets less respect than it deserves, the Chevillon wines remain relative bargains and thus they are very much worth considering.”

If you’re looking for a top-flight red Burgundy experience, certain names recur - Vosne, Chambolle, Gevrey, Rousseau, Leroy, Roumier, et al. Unfortunately, for many, these names command extraordinary prices on the market. However, values can be found in Nuits; add Chevillon to the equation, and you’ve effectively levelled the playing field.

With a supple, fruit forward and generous style, the Chevillon wines are immediately attractive. But, honest, too. The Perrieres is stony, mineral and long; the Chaignots, plummy and fleshy; Vaucrains, masculine, powerful and intense; the Cailles, graceful, floral and understated; the Pruliers, supple and sweet, with a stony core, etc. You get the idea.

What’s more, the wines age magisterially, and I have been lucky enough to have many examples from the ‘80s that more than proved their mettle. Kermit Lynch attests to the same:

“The track record of the Chevillon wines in the cellar is one of the most remarkable aspects of this storied domaine. We regularly have the good fortune to taste back through the past three decades of vintages of all the various premier crus and the wines always more than convincing—they are amongst Burgundy’s very best. In fact, I have often been more disappointed with grand cru bottlings than I am with the top-tier Chevillon premier crus.”

And, while the prices have risen over the past decade, these are still among the best values in Burgundy, especially when compared with the competition. There are few Domaines we buy as liberally and consistently as Chevillon. Don’t miss you chance with these gems from our cellar!
