It is true that Pierre Morey, alongside Anne-Claude Leflaive, was the mastermind behind the renaissance of the region’s most famous and important white wine producer’s return to excellence in the late 80’s. First, Pierre helped transition the vineyards over to biodynamics, and then he revamped the entire regime in the cellar. For the next 20 years, until today, Leflaive was universally held as the greatest producer of white Burgundy in the region, with the wines commanding incredible prices on the market.

Pierre Morey made those wines and was essential to this phenomenon. But the man also had a legacy in the vines himself and all the while he was improving, expanding and paying greater attention to his own property. When in 2008 he stepped down from his duties at Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Pierre Morey was hitting on all cylinders and producing some of the best white Burgundies in the region.

That trajectory continues to this day, as Pierre’s daughter Anne has assumed the reins at this understated, but important Domaine. Despite the august holdings and remarkable wines, there never seems to be much buzz around the Domaine. All the better, production is already minuscule and any little bit of attention could make what are profound, but available wines, just profound. And there’s already enough of that in Burgundy!

2017 is an important year for white Burgundy, and one serious buyers should not be skimping on. While not as historic a year for the reds, there is an undeniable juicy ease to the wines, and classical expression that makes the wines deeply attractive.

While the wines are “available” there’s not much of anything at all. Run, don’t walk.
