“Total Knock Out” 95 Point 2013 PAX Syrah Griffin’s Lair Sonoma Coast
The demand for Pax continues to be uncontrollable. We’re afraid we’ve unleashed a monster and the only way to stop it (or perhaps make it worse) is to provide you with more. That’s why we jumped on the small (but heavily sought after) allocation of the 2013 Syrah Griffins Lair. Hot damn is this baby delicious! Dense and sweetly fruited, armed with laser like precision and focus, we’re absolutely thrilled with this bottle. Anyone who enjoys artisanal California wine will walk away with little doubt that Pax Mahle is...Learn more

95 Points or Bigger?: 2016 Clos Erasmus Pre-arrival
This may be the safest bet in wine right now. You really can’t go wrong here. Clos I Terrasses has been leading the pack in Priorat since 1988 when Daphne Glorian threw caution to the wind and joined René Barbier and Alvaro Palacios in believing in the unforgiving, but brilliant terroir of Priorat. Decades later, Ms. Glorian, a committed Biodynamist and brilliant winemaker, crafts perhaps the defining wine of the appellation, the legendary Clos Erasmus. The second label, Laurel, is not a “second wine” strictly speaking (though in some vintages, barrels not deemed worthy of Erasmus are declassified into...Learn more

Never Enough: 2015 O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain
The uber-boutique, supremely sophisticated wines born from this special Howell Mountain estate comes and goes, never lasting more than a few days at the shop. The rule is, if you see O’Shaughnessy, then you grab it on the spot. Over the years, customers have become too accustomed to heartbreak, which is a shame because these wines offer some of the most memorable and hauntingly elegant mountain fruit we’ve experienced from anywhere in Napa. There is no going around it, O’Shaughnessy is special…and highly elusive for even for the most ardent California...Learn more

The powerful yet elegant wines of Mas Doix
The powerful yet elegant wines of Mas Doix–one of our favorite producers in Priorat–continue to astound us. While we’re not always eye to eye with Robert Parker, we completely agree with his description of these being “stunningly profound Priorat.” It is also clear that the work of Sandra Doix, the fearless and exciting young phenom in charge of the domain, is only going becoming better and better. Established in 1998, Mas Doix is continuing a tradition that was begun by family ancestors in 1908. Ms. Doix and her family work exclusively with rare old bush vines (a large number originally planted by her...Learn more

Instant Message: 2016 L’Aventure Allocation
There is no denying the talent and daring ambition of Stephan Asseo. Mr. Asseo, born into a generations-long family of wine producers in France, uprooted himself from the safe confines of Bordeaux to the limestone rich hills of West Paso Robles. What became of his small “adventure” ascended to one of the most coveted and prestigious wineries, not just in Paso Robles, or even the Central Coast, no, Mr. Asseo’s L’Aventure is one of the best in California. Molding the elegance and grace he grew up with in Bordeaux to the power and intensity of Paso Robles fruit, these are deeply...Learn more

"Quite simply, one of the absolute benchmarks for fine Priorat": 2016 Clos Erasmus
Clos i Terrases’s Clos Erasmus is an icon among the collector class. Opulent, powerful, intense and mineral, Clos Erasmus sits comfortably beside other bastions of Spanish greatness - Pingus, Vega Sicilia, and Lopez de Heredia, among a handful of others. But the sheer greatness of these wines extends far beyond Spain. Simply put, Clos Erasmus is among a small number of wines that ranks among the truly exceptional. This is true in any vintage. However, in a sleek and stylish number like 2016, this wine simply cannot be...Learn more

Pleasure Bomb Away! PAX New Release
You may remember Pax Mahle when he made tidal waves a few years back as winemaker over at Donelan and Pax Wine Cellars. The Syrahs he produced were California power houses, receiving cult-like status and massive critical praise. Sourcing from cooler climate sites in Sonoma County and Mendocino, Mr. Mahle takes his inspiration from where all Syrah inspiration should come, namely, the Northern Rhône. The fairy tale abruptly ended in a dispute with ownership in 2008, resulting in Mahle leaving Donelan and forced to give up his own label, Pax. Since that time, he continued to bowl us over...Learn more

Say it with me Now: Pi-ay-trah-DOL-shay - An Etna Cult Favorite Returns
Pietrodolce was established in 2005 on the northern slopes of Mt. Etna. Their eleven hectares of vineyards extend over an area that ranges from six to nine hundred feet above sea level. Since the beginning the estate has decided to focus exclusively on the three main varieties native to Etna: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante. Over the years the wines have garnered tremendous acclaim from the press for their unusual intensity, depth and captivating style. Of all the wines being produced on...Learn more

95 & 94 pt. Sonoma Pinot from a Living Legend
Since their first vintage in 1996, Walter Hansel Winery has been a member of an extremely short list of top quality Russian River producers - alongside icons like Kistler, Williams Selyem, Dehlinger and Rochioli. Winemaker Stephen Hansel’s wines are stunning: perfumed, classic and sublimely balanced with nary a hint of overt oak, overripe fruit or manipulation. These wines grace the top of our list each and every vintage and fortunately still remain a bit of an insider’s secret since production is miniscule compared to others in their quality class. With a classicist’s sense of restraint, and a sensible...Learn more

Tiny Production, Incredible Quality: Grand Cru Alvarinho with Chablis-challenging Intensity of Mineral

This is another extraordinary find from my Iberian trip in August, this one made in small enough production that it is released only in three packs. At the time of tasting, forty of these packs were available for the United States, so we bought all of them. That equates to about 25% of total production but is still a tiny amount to go around. This is breathtakingly good, do not miss it. It’s one where I think it’s worth referring to my scribbled shorthand notes made in the winery. Sometimes I think these say more about...
