We’ve just received a rare allocation of Austrian’s finest: FX Pichler. Pichler is by every definition of the word, a powerhouse. The estate, easily one of the most famous white wine producers in the world, specializes in monumental, supercharged (and hyper sought after) Rieslings and Gruners. Today we two wines from two legendary sites –Loibenberg and Kellerberg– that offer the quintessence of rich, exotic, multi-layered Riesling. They also hail from the 2016 vintage – one of our dear favorites for purity and verve. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to own a piece of Austria’s very best.
2016 FX Pichler Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd
“A faint, flinty touch of reduction still informs this wine's lifted citrus scents. On the palate, a taut, textured structure sends zesty lemon flavors darting across the tongue. This still needs to open up, but all the ingredients for an explosive citrus party are here. It has concentration, freshness, fruit and potential. This may become smoother but will remain beautifully slender. Drink 2020–2035.” 96 Points, Wine Enthusiast
2016 FX Pichler Kellerberg Riesling Smaragd
“An amazingly concentrated dry Riesling that somehow manages to be extraordinarily light-footed. There's a super-wide spectrum of aromas from parsley through lemon grass, with ripe white peach, mandarin orange and white chocolate in between. The breathtaking balance is more important than all of this, extending right through the incredibly long, lingering finish. Drink any time during the next thirty years! *Ranked #7 on Top 100 of 2017.” 100 Points, James Suckling
More About the Wine
Needless to say, but there is a lot to be impressed by an estate like FX Pichler, known by friends and wine geeks as ‘FX’. 80% of their production is classified as Smaragd, an astonishing figure considering it is the highest level of quality in the Wachau. They were one of the first true pioneers in Austria, making singular, world-class wines that competed on the same level as the world’s greatest wines. That’s what happens when you blessed with having parcels in some of the finest sites in the Wachau, including Kellerberg (arguably the greatest vineyard in the country).
No matter the vineyard, the thread running through all FX wines is the unbelievable mammoth scale– how they remain balanced on the knife’s edge of overboard. They are always thrilling rides of impossibly rich texture, complete with pulsating acidity and harrowing aromatics. We recommend letting them age in your cellar–if you can keep your hands off them…trust us, that’s easier said than done.
