My title makes me feel just a little dirty. Pierre Morey deserves recognition and plaudits in his own right, rather than for his groundbreaking work as the winemaker at the renowned Domaine Leflaive. Nonetheless, I feel like the wines sell and gain attention more for his work at Domaine Leflaive, rather than the incredible wines he produces at his own, eponymous Domaine. Crafting benchmark examples of Meursault 1er Perrières and Bâtard-Montrachet, you would think he would have emerged out his own shadow. But alas.
It is true that Pierre Morey, alongside Anne-Claude Leflaive, was the mastermind behind the renaissance of the region’s most famous and important white wine producer’s return to excellence in the late 80’s. First, Pierre helped transition the vineyards over to biodynamics, and then he revamped the entire regime in the cellar. For the next 20 years, until today, Leflaive was universally held as the greatest producer of white Burgundy in the region, with the wines commanding incredible prices on the market.
Pierre Morey made those wines and was essential to this phenomenon. But the man also had a legacy in the vines himself and all the while he was improving, expanding and paying greater attention to his own property. When in 2008 he stepped down from his duties at Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Pierre Morey was hitting all cylinders and producing some of the best white Burgundies in the region.
And yet, the Domaine seldom has buzz. I’ve never really understood it.
It’s clearly not for lack of critical attention or for the quality of the wine that Morey doesn’t get the attention he deserves.
Whatever the case, if you need to think of Pierre Morey as “Domaine Leflaive,” feel free to do so. All I know is that the man and his daughter Anne produce some of the most thrilling and consistently exceptional wines in Burgundy and I have some of the most important wines available in decent quantities. My advice? Buy with abandon.
