Description
Roth is a family-owned winery located in Sonoma County, California that produces Bordeaux blends with estate-grown fruit from the Alexander Valley and the Sonoma Coast. The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from parcels situated on the southern hillsides of Alexander Valley and the Sauvignon Blanc is harvested from vineyards along the Russian River. In 2009, Roth added grapes grown in the Sonoma Coast for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Each vineyard block is harvested and vinified separately by varietal. The must is cold soaked in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for several days prior to fermentation and indigenous yeast and extended maceration is employed to extract flavors. The wines age in French oak barrels for 16-18 months. As many as eight different types of French oak barrels at varying levels of toast are used to lend balance and complexity to the finished blend. Roth wines are produced and aged at their parent winery, Lancaster Estate. Jesse Katz, most recently of Screaming Eagle, is the winemaker at Lancaster and Roth. He credits his winemaking philosophy and style to his mentors – winemakers Andy Erickson, Paul Hobbs and Robert Foley. Jesse’s production team includes consulting winemaker David Ramey, assistant winemaker David Drake and vineyard consultant, Phil Freese.
