One of the great surprises of the summer was uncorking a bottle of the 2015 Scheu Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), a fantastic German red that completely knocked us off our feet. Round and juicy with a refreshing core of sweet cherries, this is our number #1 value Pinot of the year. Don’t miss this incredible surprise!
2015 Scheu Spatburgunder Trocken
Tim’s Note: Crisp, detailed and abundantly juicy the excellent 2015 Scheu Spatburgunder will appeal to everyone craving a classic, refreshing Pinot Noir. Scheu cranked out a home run with this bottling and is proof to all the doubters that there is more to Germany than just Riesling.
More About the Wine
The Pfalz is one of the warmest growing regions in Germany and at home their reds are just as celebrated as their whites. With a complex mixture of soils (sandstone, limestone, marl, loess-loam and granite to isolated stretches of slate), mild winters and dry summers, the macro-climates in the Pfalz have a rich history of growing some beautiful reds. For most of the last fifty years none of us having really paid attention to these bottles, but with the emergence of estates like Scheu that trend is beginning to quickly change.
The 2015 Scheu Spatburgunder is produced from twenty-two year old vines grown on clay soils. The grapes were hand-picked and hand sorted in late September. Following a two week maceration the must was fermented for ten days in 2,500 liter barrels with no temperature control. The wine was then aged in 2,500 liter oak barrels for one year and gently filtered before bottling. Don’t miss this spectacular value!
