Failla is one of California’s finest addresses, even though it was founded relatively recently. Then again, when it’s the brain-child of Ehren Jordan, it’s a big deal. Who’s Ehren Jordan , you ask? Well, let’s just say he had a hand in putting the Turley winery on the map, serving as winemaker and general manager for over 18 years.
Failla is not about high-powered Zinfandels, however. Rather, the focus here is on balanced Chardonnays and Pinots from the best sites in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino. You would expect a gambit with as big a legacy behind it to garner praise at first, but since its founding Failla has become one of the leading addresses in California, with a cultish following and big press in every vintage.
Check out Galloni’s recent write up on the 2016s:
Once again, Ehren Jordan and assistant winemaker Savanna Wright presented me with a dizzling array of wines. There are so many highlights in this range, that it is hard to single out just a few wines. I hope readers will take time to look through all of the notes in this article. For the sake of completeness, I have also included notes on Failla’s growing range of Oregon Pinots. Stylistically, the Failla wines lean towards the more restrained side of the spectrum, although they are certainly not lean or lacking in either depth or richness.
These really are among California’s finest wines. And we have a small parcel of the 2016 Hudson Vineyard Chard at deep discounting. Don’t miss out!
2016 Failla Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard
94 pts.: “Another brilliant wine in this range, the 2016 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard is superb. Dense, powerful and beautifully layered, the 2016 exudes richness in all of its dimensions. There is plenty of Hudson textural resonance, but the 2016 is at the same time quite polished and refined. I very much admire the sense of balance.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous
