We have sold a small ocean of Vietti’s triumphant 2013 series and this week we have decided to throw another one into the mix. Can you blame us? Any bottle stamped with the year 2013 and labeled as Vietti is pure gold. As you know it was an epic year for the Piemonte, a vintage that Luca Currado and company made some of their best wines in over a decade – including this one, the 95-point banger “knock-out” Barbaresco Masseria.
Confident to the point of towering and impeccably balanced, the 2013 Masseria is sourced from a special single vineyard (limestone and clay) that captivates with a theatrical charm while also still being a mirror to the vineyard it has been born from. It is a potent combination – especially when you consider the asking price. While certainly not inexpensive, the material and level of quality Mr. Currado captured here is a steal. It’s the best work he’s done in years. Vinified with the same care (and expense) as their single vineyard Barolo, how can you not fall in love with this wine? “The 2013 Barbaresco Masseria is fabulous. Large-scaled, ample and super-expressive, the 2013 possesses striking depth and intensity, while retaining tons of Nebbiolo nuance and translucence. Bright red cherry, cranberry, chalk and floral notes give the 2013 its aromatic intensity and lift. The flavors turn a bit darker and richer with time in the glass as the wine fills out its broad frame. Once again, Vietti’s Barbaresco punches well above its weight. The Masseria emerges from a vineyard in Bricco di Neive and is essentially vinified and aged like a Barolo. In recent years, the Vietti single-vineyard wines have inched up in price.
