Now some of the most treasured and allocated wines from the Neal Rosenthal portfolio, the Levet family’s Côtes Rôties are essential purchases for lovers of French wine. They can also be very difficult to find. These new 2017s will be no different. Agnès Levet describes the 2017 vintage as “classic”—less intense in character than 2018, with more obvious minerality and less overall heft.
Why do we (and now everyone else) love the Levet wines so much? Because they are a beacon of authenticity for Côte-Rôtie’s innate wildness. Dark. Savage. Feral. We treasure them. Produced in the same doggedly old-school manner as they have always been, the recipe is simple. They work with three and a half hectares of enviable Syrah holdings around Ampuis, everything is done with minimal de-stemming, natural fermentations, long macerations, élévage in old foudres and tonneaux, and no filtration. If you have never had these iconic wines before, believe us, they are worth every penny (and so much more).
Journaries has an elegant, classic, darker hued meatier expression of Syrah that presents as more expressive in youth, with a mineral and juicy inflection.
