Authentic Chianti Classico, Recommended by Montevertine
For lovers of Chianti Classico, the 2022 Piemaggio “Le Fioraie”, imported by Rosenthal Wine Merchants, is a textbook example of the region’s signature style: balanced, elegant, and utterly drinkable. Recommended to Neal Rosenthal by his friends at Montevertine, Piemaggio exemplifies what makes Castellina-in-Chianti so special, delivering a wine that is both drinkable and soulful.
This flagship Chianti Classico is a blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, and Colorino. The grapes undergo a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel over a 3½-week maceration, capturing the vibrancy and freshness of the fruit. After fermentation, the wine ages for two years in a combination of concrete tanks and previously used wood, primarily 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, with a touch of 500-liter French oak to add subtle nuance. The result is a wine of balance and egoless drinkability, with excellent structure and concentration that never feels forced.
On the palate, the 2022 “Le Fioraie” is utterly classic in character. Earthy notes anchor bright cherry and red berry fruit, while the tangy, refreshing acidity carries the wine through a clean, persistent finish. There is notable concentration, yet it is perfectly integrated with the vibrant fruit and mineral core, making it approachable now while promising graceful evolution with a few years of careful cellaring.
Piemaggio sits in Castellina-in-Chianti, right in the heart of the Classico region, and the estate’s vineyards reflect both tradition and care. The growers approach each vintage with patience and precision, emphasizing natural expression and terroir over intervention. This philosophy shines through in every sip, producing a Chianti Classico that is textbook, yet alive, balanced, and compelling.
