Traditional, High Altitude Chianti
Rocca di Castagnoli sits high in the southern reaches of Chianti Classico, near Gaiole, where altitude and cooling breezes preserve freshness even in warmer vintages. The estate has roots going back centuries, and today it farms some of the highest vineyards in the appellation, many planted to traditional Sangiovese clones that emphasize perfume, acidity, and structure. This is not internationalized Chianti, it is honest. I kind of wish it was wrapped in a Fiasco, it’s so traditional in feel.
The 2022 vintage was warm and dry, but careful vineyard work and those higher elevations made all the difference. Sour cherry, red plum, and wild strawberry layered with dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and that unmistakable Chianti note of dusty earth and savory spice are all there. There’s a gentle floral lift and a subtle iron-like minerality that speaks clearly of Gaiole’s rocky soils. When I say this is Pizza wine, I mean it with all possible compliments. A great Pizza from, say, Santarpio’s and this would be a great evening for me.
What makes this wine lovely to me is how clearly it teaches the fundamentals of great Chianti Classico. This is Sangiovese with food-first balance. It shows how altitude, site, and hands-off winemaking create a wine that is deeply tied to place.

The 2022 Chianti Classico is a serious wine. Dark red-toned fruit, leather, spice, tobacco and menthol give this fruity, deep Chianti Classico tons of sheer appeal. The aromatics are a bit open, suggesting the 2022 is best enjoyed over the near and medium term. This is very nicely done.
