Two Vintages of Tinto de Toro Power
The wines of Jorge Ordóñez have long stood as benchmarks for Spain, and his project in Toro, Bodegas Ordóñez, is no exception. The estate’s flagship, Tinta de Toro ‘Vatan’, is a striking example of the region’s power and depth. Crafted from some of the oldest ungrafted vines in Europe—many well over a century old—Vatan is a wine of remarkable concentration, elegance, and longevity. Tinta de Toro is a clone of Tempranillo, but this is a more burly version of the grape.
I am pleased to offer two exceptional vintages of this wine: 2018 and 2021. The 2018 represents the beauty of a mature release, a rare chance to experience Toro with a few years of bottle age. It has evolved gracefully, softening its muscular tannins into a seamless, polished texture while retaining the deep black fruit, spice, and mineral structure that makes Vatan so compelling. The value here is exceptional.
The 2021, meanwhile, shows the bold, fresh energy of youth. It is dense, structured, and bursting with life—an archetypal young Toro with tremendous potential for cellaring. Side by side, these vintages offer the chance to taste both the present and the future of Vatan, showcasing the consistency and vision of Jorge Ordóñez.
For those who collect or simply want to experience the heights of Spanish winemaking, these are must-have bottles to experience. The opportunity to secure both a perfectly aged 2018 and the powerful, promising 2021 is one not to be missed.
