Alsace White for Every Day
Alsace White for Every Day
Sophie Schaal’s “Gentil” is a terrific introduction to modern Alsace: aromatic, fresh, dry, and remarkably versatile. It has the classic Alsace combination of orchard fruit, citrus, flowers, and stony minerality, but without the heft that can sometimes make Alsace whites feel cumbersome.
The beauty of Gentil is that it drinks far above its price point. There is plenty of ripe pear, green apple, lemon zest, white flowers, and a subtle mineral edge, all carried by bright acidity and a clean, dry finish. It has enough texture to make it interesting, but enough freshness to make you immediately want another glass.
And that is really what makes this such a useful wine. Think of it as your Alsace answer to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, all rolled into one much more interesting bottle. It is fantastic with seafood, roast chicken, salads, soft cheeses, charcuterie, and anything involving a squeeze of lemon. It is equally happy sitting on the table as an aperitif.
Sophie Schaal is also exactly the kind of producer we want to support: a small-scale, quality-focused domaine making wines that emphasize place, freshness, and drinkability rather than marketing hype. The 2025 vintage gives the wine an especially lively profile, with plenty of fruit and energy.
