Spring Training: Red Wine Varieties Inspired by Burgundy & Bordeaux

Think of this class as working with the legends—the Hall of Famers of red wine grapes. Inspired by Burgundy and Bordeaux, we’ll explore the classic varieties that have set the standard for red wine around the world and continue to shape how wine is made today.

We’ll explore elegant, cool-climate styles like Pinot Noir and Gamay, before moving into the structured, age-worthy reds associated with Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

You’ll learn how climate, soil, and blending traditions influence flavor, body, tannin, and aging potential. Erika will demystify why some wines feel silky while others feel powerful, and how to recognize these styles in the glass. This class is ideal for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of classic red wines and develop a more nuanced palate.

About Erika Frey:

Wine education is Erika's passion. In addition to being a prominent teacher in the Boston area for the past 15 years, she is also an eager student. Erika has earned over 30 certificates in wine, spirits, saké and beer from WSET, the Court of Master Sommeliers, Boston University, UC Davis, Cornell and others. Erika is well versed in classic wine regions of France, Spain, Italy and California, and is notable for introducing students to her favorite up-and-coming regions such as the Finger Lakes in New York, Croatia, and the Republic of Georgia. Erika also has extensive experience in wine retail and marketing. While she loves all styles of wine, Erika will freely admit that her favorite wine grape variety is Riesling.
