2021 Barolo from Matteo Ascheri

2021 Barolo from Matteo Ascheri

Few names in Barolo are as respected for their balance of tradition and innovation as Matteo Ascheri. Based in Bra, Ascheri has built a reputation for crafting wines that capture the essence of Nebbiolo with clarity, elegance, and a deep connection to their terroir. The estate has been family-owned since 1880, and today Matteo continues this legacy with a thoughtful, detail-driven approach that has made his wines favorites among sommeliers and collectors alike.

Wearing a new label that harkens to the historic label, the 2021 Barolo is a brilliant reflection of both vintage and producer. Coming from an excellent growing season in the Langhe, the wine shows Nebbiolo’s hallmark precision: delicate yet firm tannins, lifted aromatics of roses and violets, and a core of red cherries, orange peel, and earthy spice. While approachable in its youth, the structure and balance here point clearly to a long life ahead in the cellar—this is a Barolo built for both near-term enjoyment and decades of evolution.

What sets Ascheri apart is his ability to marry authenticity with refinement. The 2021 Barolo is classically styled, with no excess weight, just purity of fruit, vivid acidity, and a silken texture that makes each sip compelling. In a region where top wines can easily reach three-figure prices, Ascheri continues to offer remarkable value without compromising on quality or character.

For collectors, Nebbiolo enthusiasts, or anyone looking to explore the soul of Barolo through a producer of impeccable reputation, this is a wine not to be overlooked.

92 Points, Wine Advocate
This is Matteo Ascheri's biggest-production Barolo with 3700 cases made. His 2021 Barolo sees fruit from vineyards in La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d'Alba. There is a pretty chalky quality to the wine that you perceive across the senses, especially the bouquet. To that, I would add cocktail cherry and cassis…The wine is informal, bright and accessible.
