A Chef and a Winemaker Walk into a Restaurant…

I may have mentioned that I have spent a lot of time working in restaurants. To be honest, I found that Chef’s have difficulty with food and wine pairings. I’ve often found that Chefs are chasing flavor and so many prefer wines such as Amarone, Krug for Champagne, and full bodies Rhone whites. Meanwhile, all of them say they love Burgundy. This is what I appreciate about this pairing of Chef and Vigneron–the wine maker is able to draw the Chef back to create a versatile, food friendly offering in this humble Cotes du Rhone with a regal back story.

This wine is the result of a unique relationship between two masters of their craft: celebrated Michelins-Starred French chef Yannick Alléno and renowned Rhône Valley vigneron Michel Chapoutier. One lives in the world of precision, balance, and texture on the plate; the other in nuance, terroir, and expression in the glass. Together, they set out to create wines specifically with gastronomy in mind; not just wines that pair with food, but wines that think like chefs.

That philosophy shows immediately in the 2024 Côtes du Rhône. Built primarily from Grenache with supporting Rhône varieties, the wine is vibrant, expressive, and incredibly versatile at the table. Aromas of ripe raspberry, black cherry, and wild strawberry rise from the glass, layered with hints of cracked pepper, dried herbs, and a touch of lavender.

On the palate, it’s supple and juicy but never heavy. There’s a beautiful sense of flow to the wine, fruit, freshness, and soft tannins moving in harmony rather than competing for attention. That balance is no accident. Alléno’s culinary influence leans toward purity and lift, while Chapoutier ensures the wine still speaks clearly of its sun-drenched, stony vineyards. The result is a red that enhances food rather than overpowering it.

This is the kind of bottle that shines across an entire meal. It’s right at home with grilled meats, roast chicken with herbs, ratatouille, mushroom dishes, or a simple charcuterie board. The bright acidity and gentle structure make it just as comfortable with tomato-based dishes as with richer, savory flavors, which is a rare trait that makes it a true kitchen-friendly red.

Beyond the story, the value here is outstanding. You’re getting the vision of a Michelin-starred chef (Sixteen stars!) and the expertise of one of the Rhône’s most respected producers, wrapped into a wine that’s approachable, food-loving, and priced for real-world drinking.
