A Classic Chianti, Partially in Classico

I recently had the pleasure of tasting the 2022 Migliarina Montozzi, ‘Villa Migliarina’ Chianti Superiore, and I have to tell you, I was genuinely excited. It was new to me, and after one sip, I knew it was destined for the flash.

The Migliarina Montozzi estate sits at a unique crossroads: partially within the prized Chianti Classico zone, rooted in the same ancient soils that have given Tuscany some of its most enduring wines. These soils—rich in galestro, limestone, and clay—bring a balance of elegance and depth that elevate this Chianti well above the ordinary.

The blend itself is a thoughtful marriage of tradition and modernity: Sangiovese, Tuscany’s noble grape, forms the backbone, delivering bright red fruit, lively acidity, and classic Tuscan character. To this, a portion of Merlot is added, imparting greater structure, roundness, and depth—making the wine immediately appealing, yet ageworthy.

What truly sets the Villa Migliarina Chianti Superiore apart, however, is its value. While many Chianti Clasicos are beginning to command far higher prices, this bottling proves that pedigree, place, and craft can still be found at an exceptional price point. It’s a wine to buy by the case: versatile at the table, sophisticated enough to impress, and priced for everyday enjoyment. At a production of only 3500 cases, it's a wine to snap up quickly and enjoy throughout the year.
