A Fresh Vintage of a Spanish Classic
Behind the wine is Bodegas Vatan, part of Jorge Ordóñez Selections, known for sourcing and reviving some of Spain’s most distinctive old vineyards. With Nisia, the focus is on expressing the true character of Verdejo, made without excessive oak or manipulation – just pure terroir in the bottle.
The grapes for Nisia come from old, low-yielding bush vines rooted in sandy soils strewn with river stones, some of which are more than 80 years old. These conditions create naturally concentrated fruit, while the high elevation vineyards in Rueda preserve freshness and acidity. The result is a wine that combines richness with remarkable vibrancy.
In the glass, the 2023 Nisia shows aromas of stone fruit, citrus blossom, and fennel, underscored by a subtle mineral edge. On the palate it is textured and layered, with crisp acidity balancing ripe pear, melon, and citrus flavors, finishing long, clean, and refreshing. This balance of fruit and tension makes it both an exceptional aperitif and a versatile partner to seafood and grilled vegetables. Enjoy it with the last bounty of fall.
This is a wine that overdelivers for the price, and given the small production from these old vines, it’s always quick to sell out.
93 Points, Tim Atkin MW
A bouquet of Bosc pear, nectarine and brined green olives paves the way for peach, honeydew melon, fennel bulb and vanilla bean flavors. Notes of white chocolate and lemon zest endure into the vibrant finish. Jorge Ordóñez Selections. Best Buy.
