A Loire White Built for Today and the Next Decade
Produced from 100% Chenin Blanc, this remarkable little Vouvray comes from one of the Loire Valley's most respected biodynamic estates. While the 2025 growing season was not particularly challenging the fruit emerged beautifully concentrated, delivering vibrant freshness alongside layers of exotic fruit character. There was some concern that concentration would be negatively impacted by heavy crops, but smart canopy management and fruit dropping kept the wines rich and delicious.
The secret to this wine's complexity begins in the vineyard. The vines, averaging 30 to 40 years of age, are planted on the clay-siliceous hillsides of Vouvray, where a significant presence of flint ("silex") covers the surface soils. These flint-rich soils are highly prized for their ability to produce wines of linear precision and minerality. Beneath parts of the vineyard lies Vouvray's famous tuffeau limestone, a geological foundation that contributes structure and longevity.
Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau has farmed biodynamically since 1995, nurturing healthy, living soils and allowing the unique character of the terroir to shine through in every vintage.
In the cellar, the wine receives equally thoughtful treatment. After a gentle, slow pressing and natural settling, fermentation takes place before the wine is transferred to tank and aged on its fine lees in the estate's limestone caves until spring. Around six months of lees aging adds texture, richness, and depth, beautifully balancing Chenin Blanc's naturally vibrant acidity while preserving its freshness and mineral precision.
The result is a dry Vouvray with remarkable energy: bright citrus, orchard fruit, hints of tropical fruit, and a distinctive flinty minerality carried by a mouthwatering backbone of acidity. A touch of residual sugar provides balance rather than sweetness, enhancing the wine's overall harmony.
One item I love about great Chenin at this price is its extraordinary capacity to age. Even at a modest price point, quality Vouvray can evolve gracefully for a decade or more, developing layers of honeyed complexity, lanolin, dried fruit, and savory mineral notes while retaining freshness. Few white wines offer such a combination of immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring potential. This is a wine built for the New England summer. Scallops on the grill, or even just as a refreshing sipper on the back patio make me come back for more.
