A Return to Traditional Napa Sauvignon Blanc
In a place as much of a monoculture as Napa Valley, it’s easy to forget that wine used to be just one part of a much bigger agricultural picture. Apricot and almond trees, olives, grains, and livestock all used to live side by side with grapevines in a beautiful harmony. Long Meadow Ranch is a rare throwback to that older way of life and their 2024 Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc captures that spirit beautifully.
Long Meadow Ranch isn’t just a winery with a scenic tasting room, although it does have that. It’s a true working ranch with deep roots in Napa’s history. The Hall family began restoring the property decades ago, bringing neglected vineyard land, olive groves, orchards, and pasture back to life. Today, the ranch produces not only grapes, but also vegetables, fruits, herbs, and grass-fed beef. It’s a fully functioning farm in the classic sense.
That connection shows up most vividly at Farmstead, their restaurant right on the property in St. Helena. Much of what’s served comes directly from the ranch itself, creating a seamless link between field and plate. The wines are made with that same philosophy: balanced, food-friendly, and meant to complement a meal rather than overpower it.
LMR’s 2024 Sauvignon Blanc from Rutherford is a perfect expression of this old-school Napa mindset. Before the era of ultra-ripe, high-alcohol styles, Napa whites were prized for freshness, structure, and their ability to age gracefully. Long Meadow Ranch holds firmly to that tradition. This Sauvignon Blanc is picked for brightness and balance, resulting in lower alcohol, lively acidity, and a clean, focused flavor profile.
In the glass, it’s vibrant and inviting, with aromas of citrus blossom, Meyer lemon, and green apple, layered with subtle notes of fresh-cut herbs and a gentle mineral edge. The palate is crisp and energetic, with refreshing acidity and a finish that’s more about lift and clarity than richness.
Production here is small, which allows for careful farming and thoughtful winemaking at every step. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is overdone. The goal is purity of site and a style that feels timeless rather than trendy. If you, like I, miss the fresher, more restrained side of Napa Valley, LMR delivers a beautiful reminder of how elegant and drinkable these wines can be. Also, go visit the property. The restaurant is legendary, the ranch is beautiful, and I always enjoy being able to take that step back in time.
91 Points, James Suckling
Floral and fruit-driven, with lemon blossoms, white peaches, crushed stones, lemongrass and citrus on the nose. The palate is mid-weighted with a generous texture and bright acidity. A really bright and fresh sauvignon with plenty of generous fruit. Drink now. Screw cap.
