Almost 100 Years of Barbaresco, One Remarkable Family
Great Barbaresco doesn’t happen overnight. For the Giordano family, it’s a tradition that began in 1930, and nearly a century later, they’re still producing the kind of beautifully expressive Nebbiolo that reminds us why this corner of Piedmont is so revered.
When Teresa and Jeff came back from the latest Vineyard Road tasting, they couldn’t stop talking about how delicious this wine was, and they couldn’t believe the price! We all agree: this is ridiculous value.
The Giordano family’s roots run deep in the village of Barbaresco, where generations have devoted themselves to crafting wines that reflect their vineyards rather than overwhelming them with winemaking. Their Cavanna bottling is particularly special. First bottled separately in 1971, it comes from a historic vineyard area that the family has championed for decades. Luigi Giordano remains the only producer to bottle a Barbaresco bearing the Cavanna designation.
The 2023 is a gorgeous expression of classic Barbaresco. Fragrant red cherries and ripe raspberries rise from the glass alongside dried rose petals, anise, warm spice, and an enticing hint of woodland earth. On the palate, bright, lively acidity carries layers of juicy red fruit, delicate floral notes, and savory complexity. The tannins are beautifully textured, providing that unmistakable Nebbiolo structure without overwhelming the wine’s elegance. There’s freshness, finesse, and a wonderfully persistent finish.
This is exactly the kind of wine we love discovering: a family estate with genuine history, a distinctive vineyard, and a Barbaresco that delivers far more character and pedigree than you might expect at this level.

We’d make a beautifully prepared pasta with plenty of Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Romano to go along with this wine. For a little inspiration, try Geoffrey Zakarian’s Fettuccine Alfredo. Rich, comforting, and packed with the savory depth of aged Italian cheeses, it’s the kind of deceptively simple dish that feels incredibly special when paired with a beautiful Barbaresco. If you can get your hands on some truffles to grate over the top, even better!
We hope you take this opportunity to spoil yourselves at home. We know we will be!
