Beyond Avellino: The Fiano We Couldn't Stop Talking About

If you know Fiano mostly through Fiano di Avellino, Sannio offers a different and very worthwhile look at the grape. The wines can still have Fiano's characteristic texture and aromatic intensity, but the expression here tends to be especially bright, floral and easy to appreciate at the table.

The 2025 is the current release from Vigne di Malies, and what stood out to our team was how clearly it balances ripe fruit with freshness. We were shocked when we saw the price we could offer this at! There is plenty of generosity, with notes leaning toward pear, yellow fruit and a touch of tropical fruit, but the wine never feels heavy. Good acidity and a savory, slightly saline quality carry everything through the finish.

Vigne di Malies is a small family-run estate in Guardia Sanframondi, in the heart of Sannio in Campania. The Foschini family farms just over six hectares, focusing largely on the native grapes of the region, including Fiano, Falanghina, Greco, Coda di Volpe and Aglianico.

Their Fiano comes from the Fontana dell'Olmo vineyard, a south-facing site at roughly 330 meters above sea level, planted on calcareous-clay soils. The wine is made entirely from Fiano, with whole grapes directly pressed, fermented at controlled temperature and aged exclusively in stainless steel.

That stainless-steel élevage is especially important here: there is no oak getting in the way, so the 2025 comes across as a particularly clear, energetic expression of the grape and vineyard. The fruit is expressive, but there is enough acidity and savory character to give the wine shape.

An earlier vintage was described by Italian wine writer Luciano Pignataro as floral and tropical, with acidity and sapidity carrying a long, flowing finish, a description that lines up remarkably well with what we found in the 2025 vintage.

For a food pairing, think simply prepared seafood, grilled fish, fresh cheeses, Caprese salad, or pasta with summer vegetables and fresh basil, we especially love Spaghetti alla Nerano (fried zucchini pasta recipe)The combination of texture and freshness gives Fiano enough presence for food without overpowering more delicate dishes.
