Champagne Dreams on a Maconnais Budget
Domaine des Deux Roches has long been one of my favorite producers in the Mâconnais. Based in the shadow of the iconic Roc de Solutré, the estate farms vineyards rooted in the same limestone-rich soils that make Burgundy’s greatest Chardonnays so iconic. That limestone signature is unmistakable here, providing the wine with precision, energy, and remarkable freshness.
Made entirely from Chardonnay, this Crémant de Bourgogne is crafted very much in the Champagne tradition. The wine spends roughly a year aging on its lees, which is long enough to develop complexity and texture while preserving the purity and vibrancy of the fruit. The result is a sparkling wine that punches far above its weight.
In the glass, it offers bright aromas of ripe orchard fruits, fresh lemon citrus, and subtle hints of brioche. The palate is crisp and focused, driven by bracing acidity and a finely textured mousse that recalls far more expensive Champagnes. There is a beautiful balance between richness and tension, with the limestone soils lending a mineral backbone that keeps every sip refreshing and inviting. I really enjoyed tasting this wine. The only downside is it made me wish my workday was over so I could just enjoy a few glasses of it.
If you're looking for a Champagne-style sparkling wine that combines Burgundian pedigree, exceptional value, and genuine character, the Domaine des Deux Roches Crémant de Bourgogne deserves a place in your cellar—and more importantly, in your glass.

Wine Enthusiast Tasting Notes:
"Hints of crushed white pepper and oyster shell lend a mineral tension to this spine-tingling blanc de blancs composed of Chardonnay grown on limestone soils. Packed with tiny, piercing bubbles, it's a thrilling yet lean, nervous sip that finishes with bracing lime and lemon acidity. — Anna Lee C. Iijima"
