Classic Bordeaux, 2015 St. Emilion
Two weeks, two St-Émilions… but this one could not be more different from the last. Last week’s wine was all plush fruit and youthful swagger; dense, juicy, and clearly built for the long haul. Today’s offer takes the opposite approach. The 2015 Château Gueyrosse, St-Émilion Grand Cru is already speaking in that wonderfully old-school Bordeaux accent: savory, earthy, and deeply satisfying.
And right now, 2015 Bordeaux is in a particularly sweet spot for value. The vintage was outstanding across the Right Bank but many wines are just now hitting the market with enough bottle age to show their true character. For drinkers who love classic Bordeaux flavors rather than just fruit and power, this is exactly the moment to dive in.
Château Gueyrosse’s fruit has softened and broadened, allowing the secondary and tertiary notes to step forward. Aromas of dried cherry, plum, forest floor, and tobacco unfold in the glass, followed by the savory side that makes traditional Bordeaux lovers swoon: mushrooms, freshly dug earth, and umami richness, while still having the power of the 2015 vintage. This is earth-driven but not tired, with a strong backbone of dark fruit. Even with the mature character emerging there’s still plenty of life and depth in the wine. The tannins have melted into something supple and seamless, making this the kind of bottle you open for dinner rather than bury in the cellar for another decade.
In short, this is the flavor profile that made Bordeaux famous in the first place. This isn’t about glossy fruit but about complexity, balance, and savory nuance. This is what I think of when I taste “old-school Bordeaux”. Also, the pricing showcases what used to be so great about Bordeaux. Great value at every level of wine-making and age-worthiness at every level as well.
