Day Five:Ideal Wine & Spirits–Alpine Pinot Grigio
I’m excited to share one of my absolute favorites from the Ideal Wine & Spirits portfolio—the 2024 Colterenzio Sudtirol – Alto Adige Pinot Grigio “Puiten.” I saved this for last on purpose. Founded in 1960, Colterenzio is one of the newest and most exciting developments in South Tyrol.
Colterenzio isn’t just another winery. It’s a cooperative of roughly 300 small landholders, most of whom produce farmers by trade, and many are also beekeepers. That connection to the land shows in everything they produce; there’s a level of care, patience, and respect here that you can taste in the glass. As a part of a multifaceted winegrowing region, Alto Adige manages to avoid being a monoculture of grapes with a fully healthy biome with unique indigenous yeasts. Like a brewery, this valley has it’s own special biome that impacts the flavors of the wines made here.
“Puiten” is their standout Pinot Grigio bottling, and it’s a clear example of what this grape can become when it’s treated seriously. This is not a light, shy, forgettable Pinot Grigio. Instead, it delivers striking minerality, real depth, and a bright, driving acidity that keeps everything focused and fresh. There’s richness here, but it’s balanced. I believe that the local yeasts here are what create this. Plus the elevation, cold evenings, and long hang times. This is wine that is of the mountain and tastes like it. Monumental, sturdy, and beautiful, this tastes the way the local Dolomites look.
Quite simply, it checks every box for me: history, craftsmanship, and value.
As this is my final offer featuring wines from Ideal, it felt right to end on something I genuinely love and believe in. If you’re looking for a white that punches above its weight and redefines expectations, this is it.
