Dry Klein Constantia? Or Just Delicious SA Sauvignon?
If there’s one white wine that has completely won me over this year, it’s the 2024 Bayten Sauvignon Blanc from Constantia, South Africa. I was not expecting this out of a South African Sauvignon. This is a wine that immediately grabs your attention with energy, bright, fresh, and incredibly expressive. Think vibrant citrus, crisp green apple, and a touch of tropical fruit, all wrapped in a clean, mineral-driven backbone that keeps everything focused and refreshing.
There’s also a fascinating story behind the vineyard itself. Situated right next to the famed Klein Constantia estate, this vineyard and these vines were once used for the production of the region’s historic dessert wines. As consumer tastes have shifted away from sweeter styles, the fruit has found new life in dry Sauvignon Blanc, resulting in a wine that carries all the pedigree of this legendary site, now expressed in a brighter, more contemporary form.
Constantia, one of South Africa’s most historic and cool-climate regions, is tailor-made for this style. The maritime influence helps preserve that lively acidity while allowing the fruit to fully ripen, giving the wine both vibrancy and depth.
This is one of my favorite Sauvignon Blancs I’ve tasted this year. It’s the kind of bottle that works just as well on its own as it does at the table. Perfect with seafood, fresh salads, or anything that calls for a crisp, refreshing companion.
This Sauvignon has all the zesty acidity and aromatic punch you want from but with no excess here. The over-the-top ripe fruit of New Zealand or overly grassy flavors that can crop up in Napa with Sauvignon are not here. This is just clarity and a beautifully polished finish that keeps you coming back for another sip.

This Sauvignon Blanc has an attractive floral and herbal nose, featuring delicious aromas of kiwi, melon and linden tea that repeat on the ample palate. Subtle citrus and herbal notes are elevated by optimal acidity.
