From Pioneer to Benchmark: Ken Wright
Long before the Willamette Valley was shorthand for world-class Pinot, Ken Wright was quietly, stubbornly, and passionately proving that Oregon could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the great regions of the world.
Ken’s story begins not with a trust fund or a famous château, but with grit. After early experiences in California and Burgundy, he arrived in Oregon in the 1980s when vineyards were sparse, weather was unpredictable, and belief in the region required equal parts faith and patience. He co-founded Panther Creek, championed single-vineyard bottlings when few cared about them, and eventually launched Ken Wright Cellars in 1994 which was built on the radical idea that place matters, and that Pinot Noir should tell you exactly where it comes from.
Three decades later, that philosophy remains unchanged. What has changed is the Valley around him. Thanks in no small part to Ken’s influence, Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is now globally respected. These 2024 releases show why his wines continue to define the standard of Willamette wines rather than chase trends.
The 2024 Ken Wright Cellars Pinot Noir, Willamette is a masterclass in balance, showing vibrant red fruit, subtle earth, lifted aromatics, and that unmistakable Willamette freshness and spice. It’s expressive without being flashy, Pinot Noir as Ken Wright has always believed it should be.
The 2024 Ken Wright Cellars Chardonnay, Willamette follows the same ethos. Forget heavy-handed oak or excess weight, this is Chardonnay shaped by cool nights, a long growing season, and a winemaker who respects nuance. Crisp orchard fruit, gentle texture, and energy that keeps you coming back for another sip.
These wines aren’t just delicious, they’re living history. They represent the arc of Oregon wine itself. Beginning from a hopeful experiment to global benchmark, guided all along by a steady hand and an unwavering belief in the land.
