From the School of Comando G: Granito de Gredos

If you follow Spanish wine, Comando G is probably already on your radar. Dani Landi and Fernando García helped change the conversation around Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, showing just how elegant, floral and mineral the grape can be when grown in these high, granite-strewn vineyards.

Which brings us to a bottle our team was very excited to taste.

The men behind 2023 Granito de Gredos, Aitor Paul and David Villamiel, worked with Dani and Fernando of Comando G before starting their own project, A Pie de Tierra. And when the Granito project needed a new home, Dani and Fernando recommended their former protégés to take it over.

That connection makes a lot of sense once you taste the wine.

Made from Garnacha grown in the granite soils of Méntrida, on the eastern side of the Sierra de Gredos, Granito shows a side of Spanish Garnacha that can surprise you if you're expecting something big and heavy. It's fragrant and lifted, with bright red cherry and wild strawberry, floral and herbal notes, fresh acidity and that distinctly stony character Gredos is known for.

Our team loved how much flavor it delivers without feeling weighed down. There's plenty of fruit, but the freshness and savory mineral edge keep pulling you back to the glass.

At 14.5% alcohol, it still has enough warmth and generosity to feel just right as we head into cooler weather.

For a fall tapas night, we'd pair it with José Andrés' Gambas al Ajillo, one of Spain's classic garlic shrimp dishes. The sweet, savory shrimp, olive oil, garlic and gentle heat are a great match for Granito's bright red fruit, freshness and mineral edge.

Add some crusty bread for the garlicky olive oil, pour a slightly cool glass of Granito, and you have a pretty ideal way to ease into fall.
