When most people think of Provence, rosé is probably the first wine that comes to mind.
Charlie, our GM in Watertown, was reminded of just how strong that association is recently when he told someone about a red wine he had been enjoying from Provence. The response was: “They make red wine in Provence?”
They certainly do. Provence has a long and fascinating wine history that extends well beyond rosé, and Haru Blanc 2024 from Domaine Henri Milan is a great example.
When our Fine Wine Team sat down to taste the 2024 vintage, we were immediately impressed by its body and character. We looked at each other, a little perplexed, trying to figure out exactly what was making the wine so compelling. It was delicious, but difficult to pin down.
Then we found it: fresh clove, orchard fruit, white peach and floral notes, along with a subtle savory quality and saline freshness.
Suddenly, we knew what we wanted to eat with it.
Butternut squash soup with crème fraîche. Sausage and apple bread pudding. Roasted meats. Root vegetables. The wine's combination of richness, freshness and gentle spice feels particularly well suited to the flavors of fall.
Haru is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Savagnin, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay and Roussanne, grown in clay-limestone soils over blue marl. Domaine Henri Milan farms with a focus on the health of the soil and the character of the vineyard, and bottles Haru as Vin de France, giving them the freedom to work outside traditional Provençal appellation rules.
Even the name has a story: Haru means “spring” in Japanese, a nod to freshness and renewal. Henri Milan's son Théophile now continues the family's work, building on his father's unconventional approach to Provence.
For us, Haru was a wine that took a moment to reveal itself. Once that clove and orchard-fruit character came through, we knew it belonged on the fall table and we wanted more.
