The 2024 vintage brings a particularly elegant expression of Côte du Py. Following the richer 2022 and 2023 vintages, this release leans into the bright acidity, expressive aromatics, and finesse that make Gamay such a pleasure to drink. It's a perennial favorite here at Gordon's, and we're delighted to have it back!
There's also a wonderful story behind the winemaker.
When Burgaud first met his future wife, Christine, her father opened a bottle of Côte du Py that was more than 20 years old. That remarkable introduction to the aging potential of Gamay helped shape Burgaud's dedication to Morgon. He established his domaine in 1989 and has since become one of the region's most respected producers.
His old vines grow on the celebrated Côte du Py hillside, known for its distinctive blue schist soils that contribute depth, minerality, and structure. It's a fascinating corner of Beaujolais, producing wines that are wonderfully approachable young yet develop surprising complexity with age.
The 2024 is full of character. Expect wild strawberry, black raspberry, tart cherry, and plum, layered with violets, cracked pepper, and a distinctly stony, savory finish. It's lively and elegant, with just enough earthy character and structure to make it especially enjoyable at the dinner table.
Thomas Parker MW awarded it 93+ points, while Vinous gave it 91 points and Jancis Robinson awarded it 17/20. With its beautiful fruit, distinctive minerality, and unmistakable sense of place, Burgaud's Côte du Py reminds us why Morgon offers such wonderful value.
A Delicious Pairing from America's Test Kitchen
Jean-Marc Burgaud's 2024 Côte du Py would be a beautiful match for America's Test Kitchen's Mushroom Bisque. The wine's earthy, savory notes and stony minerality complement the soup's blend of mushrooms, fresh thyme, and dry sherry, while its bright cherry and raspberry fruit and lively acidity provide a refreshing contrast to the rich, velvety cream. You can also enjoy this wine alongside typical bistro fare: roasted chicken with fresh thyme, brined pork chops with roasted autumnal vegetables, or steak with sautéed mushrooms.
A perennial favorite, a beautifully expressive vintage, and a terrific value from one of Morgon's most respected producers. This is one worth stocking up on!
