Louis/Dressner Day 1: Chinon Rosé by Olga Raffault

For years, we’ve looked to Louis/Dressner Selections as one of the most important importers in the world of authentic European wine. Their portfolio has always reflected a simple but increasingly rare philosophy: champion small growers farming responsibly, working honestly, and making wines that speak clearly of place rather than trend. Founded in the late 1980s by Joe Dressner, alongside Kevin McKenna and Denis Cherin, Louis/Dressner helped introduce American drinkers to a generation of traditionally-minded French growers long before “natural wine” became a marketing category. Their approach was never about fashion but about preserving regional identity through thoughtful farming and sustainability. Here comes day 1.

One of the enduring stars of the Louis/Dressner portfolio is Olga Raffault, one of my favorite producers in Chinon and one of the Loire Valley’s most historically significant domaines. You may have, if you are an avid reader, heard me state previously that Chinon was my first wine love, and these wines are in the same vein. Established in the 1930s and shaped profoundly by Olga Raffault herself beginning in the 1950s, the estate became known for elevating Cabernet Franc from a blending grape or rustic country wine into something capable of elegance, longevity, and remarkable nuance. Today the domaine remains family run, maintaining the same commitment to traditional viticulture that made the estate famous.

The 2025 Olga Raffault Chinon Rosé is a perfect expression of that philosophy. Made entirely from Cabernet Franc grown on the limestone and gravel soils surrounding Chinon, the wine is produced using direct pressing. Unlike darker, heavier rosés made through extended skin contact, this technique results in a wine that is bright, mineral-driven, and very gouleyant.

Wild strawberry, crushed raspberry, white flowers, and citrus peel emerge immediately from the glass, but underneath the fruit is the unmistakable Loire signature: chalky minerality, savory herbs, and mouthwatering acidity. It is refreshing without being simple. It reminds me of a good adult pool party.

Wines like this are exactly why we continue to value our relationship with Louis/Dressner Selections. Drink up with pleasure.
