‘Pure’ Organic Sancerre

Crisp, Clean, and Utterly Refreshing

Some wines are just... nice. Polite. They smile, make small talk, and quietly disappear. But the 2023 Henri Bourgeois, Sancerre “Pure” walks into the room, kicks off its shoes, and starts telling you stories about flinty hillsides, sun-drenched vines, and a family that’s been making wine in Sancerre since your great-great-grandparents were figuring out how to boil water. It’s got presence—and I’m completely smitten.

This gem comes from the Famille Bourgeois, who’ve spent ten generations perfecting their obsession with Sauvignon Blanc and the rolling, mineral-rich slopes of Chavignol. “Pure” is their certified-organic love letter to the land—meticulously hand-harvested, gently pressed, and cool-fermented to coax out every bit of elegance and energy. The nose hits with white flowers and ripe yellow fruit, with just enough candied angelica to make you feel like someone slipped you a secret. Then comes the palate: fresh, generous, perfectly balanced, with a smoky, flinty finish that lingers like the last line of a great novel.

I’ve had it with scallops, lobster, goat cheese, and—no shame—a Tuesday night grilled cheese. It plays well with others but doesn’t need company to shine. If you’re into wines with charm, depth, and just the right amount of French attitude, “Pure” is worth your attention. Probably more than a few bottles’ worth.
