Ribera del Duero for Summer!

Ribera del Duero for Summer!

Ribera del Duero for Summer!

Ribera del Duero has earned its reputation for powerful, concentrated reds. But with summer arriving, what I don’t want is sheer weight at the expense of refreshment. Bodegas Arrocal fits that bill beautifully. This is Arrocal's entry-level bottling—their "Village" or joven cuvée—and it captures a side of Ribera that is rare but increasing in popularity. It’s full of vibrant fruit, energy, and drinkability.yes, Pingus and Vega Sicilia are admittedly world class wines, but there is something to be said for the zeitgeist asking for greater drinkability over greater concentration.

There is plenty of Tempranillo character here. Fresh blackberry, plum, and dark cherry notes leap from the glass. But what makes this wine stand out is its lift. The fruit feels bright rather than heavy, supported by lively acidity and a freshness that keeps you reaching for another sip. There is no excess weight, no overbearing oak, and none of the palate fatigue that can come with more ambitious examples from the region. In short, this is Ribera meant for drinking, not contemplating.

That makes it one of the most versatile reds you can have on hand this season. Serve it with a light chill on a warm evening. Open it alongside burgers, sausages, grilled vegetables, or skirt steak fresh off the barbecue. Bring it to a backyard gathering. Pour it at a casual dinner party. Keep a few bottles tucked away for those moments when guests drop by unexpectedly and you need something delicious that everyone will enjoy.

In my mind, this is another case-buy for summer to stock up on.
