RWM Day 3! Chaintres’ Saumur Rose
In a category often defined by immediacy, it’s refreshing to come across a rosé that plays the long game. Brought in by RWM, the 2024 Château de Chaintres Saumur Rosé “Les Hirondelles” is not your typical porch-pounder, but is a serious, structured wine that just happens to wear a pink hue. RWM continues to champion producers who lean into authenticity and sense of place, and this small, family-owned estate is a perfect example of that ethos in action.
Also imported by RWM, Château de Chaintres is one of those under-the-radar Loire Valley gems that overdelivers vintage after vintage. With deep roots dating back to 1675, when it was established by the Oratorian monks of Notre Dame des Ardilliers, the estate today spans 15 hectares in the heart of Saumur-Champigny. Farming has been organic for over a decade, with a full conversion to biodynamics completed in 2020. Really, though, the wines have been made this way for centuries. Chaintres had to wait for certifications to catch up to their traditions.
“Les Hirondelles” is 100% Cabernet Franc, a rosé that drinks like a light red. Vibrant and tangy, with a subtle grip and a core of crunchy red fruit, savory herbs, and mineral tension are all hallmarks here, with an addition of palate weight from the year in bottle. It’s direct-pressed, spontaneously fermented, and raised in stainless steel with minimal sulfur, preserving every ounce of energy and character. There’s a wildness here, a brazen liveliness that sets it apart from the sea of simple rosés.
While most rosés are best enjoyed within months of release, this is one I like to revisit in its second or third year in bottle, where it gains depth, texture, and complexity. Other roses I like the year after include Bandol and Rioja mostly, but this one fits the bill as well. Think of it less as a seasonal wine and more as a year-round staple. Dive in, grab a couple, and see a rose that will evolve over the next year or two.
