Sancerre’s Sister Appellation, Quincy
Quincy is one of the Loire Valley’s great insider appellations. It sits directly across the river from Sancerre and shares the same limestone and clay soils, the same cool continental climate, and the same singular focus on Sauvignon Blanc. In the glass, the resemblance is striking: bright citrus, green apple, fresh herbs, flinty minerality, and that unmistakable Loire Valley snap of acidity. The difference is not in quality, it’s in price.
Domaine Trotereau is a small, family-run estate working with old vines and meticulous vineyard practices. They farm sustainably, harvest carefully, and vinify with restraint, letting the terroir speak rather than covering it with oak or excess winemaking tricks. The result is a Quincy that delivers everything Sancerre lovers crave: energy, purity, texture, and precision without the Sancerre price.
The 2023 vintage is especially successful. A long, even growing season gave the fruit beautiful ripeness while preserving razor-sharp freshness. This wine is vibrant and mouthwatering, with layers of lemon zest, white peach, gooseberry, and crushed stone, finishing long and clean with that saline edge that makes you immediately reach for another sip.
If you love Sancerre, and who doesn’t, this is one of the smartest bottles you can buy right now.
Same grapes. Same soils. Same style. Just far better value.
From Kermit Lynch, Importer
Quincy was the second recognized appellation in France in 1936, second only to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Sauvignon is able to ripen more fully here while retaining a very interesting aromatic profile, and the wines are capable of aging quite gracefully. As recently as fifty years ago, the wines of Quincy were more recognized in France for their quality than Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé, and commanded a higher price. Today the appellation has largely faded from recognition, and cave cooperatives have bought up a lot of the land at pennies on the dollar. With pride and excitement, we once again bring you the real deal from Quincy.
