The Chablis Conspiracy: 2023 Savary VV and a Wink from Raveneau?

The Chablis Conspiracy: 2023 Savary VV and a Wink from Raveneau?

Chablis with a Conspiracy Theory—and Serious Cut

Let me share a story I recently heard from someone I trust—a longtime industry pro who knows the inner workings of French wine better than most, and who just returned from a trip through the great wine route of France with the Kermit Lynch team.

They made all the key stops: Muscadet, the Loire, Burgundy, Bordeaux—but it was their visit to Chablis that left the strongest impression. It was all a little surreal, my friend said—like walking into a secret society of Chablis, where unspoken alliances and quiet glances said more than words. And then, amidst all this, came the 2023 Savary Chablis Sélection Vieilles Vignes. It was different. Concentrated, mineral, electric. It had cut, depth, and real finesse. In a flight of Savary wines, this one stood out like a different species entirely.

It also looked different—yellow wax capsule, a unique label, a heavier, darker bottle. As they tasted, one of the more seasoned travelers leaned over, pointed to the yellow wax, tapped the side of his nose, and gave a subtle wink. Another simply said, “Well, you noticed the capsule, right?”

Here’s the theory: before Savary began bottling for himself, he leased vineyards—some of them to Raveneau. Word is, the old Vaillons vines that supplied Raveneau for years came from Savary. Some still might. And this cuvée—the Sélection Vieilles Vignes—might just be a quiet collaboration, or at least the result of close consultation with the Raveneau family.

There’s no official acknowledgment of any of this. But if you connect the dots—the vineyard history, the unusual bottling, the stark difference in quality, and the whispered nods from people who know—you might come away thinking what my friend did: this isn’t just another Savary Chablis.

Whether it’s Raveneau in disguise or simply the best thing Savary has ever produced, the wine is stunning. We were able to get just a small parcel. If you’re curious—and you should be—this is the one to try.
