The Easy-Yes Chablis

This has always been a great value Chablis producer at every level-village, 1er, GC. I know this, you know this. As I was looking at a bottle left with me as a sample to taste the current vintage, a different sales person looked at it and said “I don’t ever want to sell you on someone else’s wines, but you should use this one. It's always good.” That’s tall praise from a salesperson. I think I’ve only had that happen four or five times in my career. So maybe I should drop the mic here and just tell you I can’t come up with a better sales pitch.

But since we both know I’m not actually capable of stopping there, let’s talk about why this wine always delivers and why the 2024 might be one of the best quality-to-price plays in white Burgundy you’ll see this year.

Domaine Gautheron sits in the sweet spot of Chablis: old vines, serious vineyard holdings, and a house style that’s all about clarity and precision rather than oak or flash. This is classic, limestone-driven Chardonnay. This is the kind of bottle that reminds you why Chablis is its own category of white Burgundy entirely.

The 2024 vintage shows beautiful energy and purity. The nose is all crushed oyster shell, lemon zest, green apple skin, and that cool, airy floral note that signals real mineral tension. On the palate, it’s bright and lifted, with crisp citrus and orchard fruit wrapped around a chalky, saline backbone. There’s just enough mid-palate weight to make it satisfying, but the finish is all snap, freshness, and mouthwatering drive. It tastes like Chablis should. This is clean, focused, and dangerously easy to go back for another glass.

This is the bottle you open when someone says they want “a good Chablis” — and you actually want to impress them without wrecking the budget.

Perfect with oysters, shrimp cocktail, grilled white fish, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, or simply a cold glass and a dozen excuses not to share.
